What is motion sickness?

Motion sickness is nothing but feeling sick which is triggered by motion or movement in a vehicle, especially during travel.

Motion sickness is triggered by movement and motion caused in a transport in which we travel.  Most of us can experience this kind of sickness while traveling in bus, train, car, airplane, boat or any closed vehicle.

In short, any type of travel, which has repeated movements such as going over bumps on roads in four-wheeler, moving up and down in a boat, crossing zig-zag pathways or hairpin bends such as in hill stations.  It can occur on amusement rides also.  Seeing the movement of others can also trigger this issue.

Conditions related to motion sickness are nausea, vomiting, vertigo, headache and dizziness (lightheadedness).  Complications rarely include dehydration and electrolyte problems.  Motion sickness is a very common disturbance of the inner ear.  Even if you close your eyes to avoid such disturbances, your inner ear is capable of detecting the movements.

The symptoms of motion sickness will last for several hours.  Once the motion is stopped, the symptoms will eventually disappear.

During an unavoidable traveling situation, some of the home remedies, when used appropriately, seems to be very effective.

Apple Cider Vinegar – Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon of honey in a cup of warm water.  Consume it 30 minutes before traveling.  This will subside the motion sickness symptoms.

Minimize your head movements.  Motion sickness can be aggravated by sudden movements of your head.

Try to stare out at the horizon, where the sky meets the earth.

Avoid staring the mobile phone or books during travel.  If you read during travel, your eyes stay fixed on a stationery object, yet your body feels the motion of the vehicle, which causes sensory contradiction.  Instead, focus at a distant object or focus on the road in front of you such that all your senses can confirm that you are on the move.

Stay cool and relaxed.  Sometimes, just the thought of getting sick can make you even more sick.  Try to stay calm and relaxed as possible.
