Home remedies for cough hacks

Waking up in the middle of the night with coughing and hacking for hours is an uncomfortable feeling.

Cough is a reflex action that attempts to clear the foreign particles or dust that clogs your airways. 

It may be due to allergy, dust, smoke, mucus formation, infection, phlegm production, etc.  People sensitive to perfumes and fragrances may also develop cough.

Seasons can trigger cough spells, especially the winter season.

Sometimes cough is accompanied with troubled breathing, itchy throat, congestion, etc.


Persistent cough may disturb the sleep pattern and interrupt our day-to-day activities.

Here are some natural remedies straight from the kitchen.  These remedies will help alleviate your cough symptoms more naturally..

 

Salt Water Gargle.  It is an utmost easiest remedy.  Dissolve rock salt in a glass of hot water and gargle thoroughly.  It will give instant relieve from itchy throat and cough.

 

Turmeric.  In a glass of hot milk, add quarter teaspoon of turmeric powder.  It is a great remedy for dry cough.  It will help relieve the discomfort of the throat.  Gulp a cup of warm turmeric milk every night to get uninterrupted sleep during your cough spells.  Turmeric has both antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

 

Honey.  It is an effective cough remedy for adults and children.  In a glass of hot water, add a pinch of pepper and about 2 teaspoons of honey.  Stir it well before consuming.  Honey will soothe the throat irritation and it is safe to use during coughs.  Try this remedy twice a day during cough for better results.

 

Ginger Tea.  Ginger is a popular home remedy to treat sore throats.  Ginger has a potential to treat infections of respiratory tracts.  Just add half a teaspoon of raw ginger paste while preparing tea and consume it.  It will taste great along with honey as a sweetener.

 

Warm Water.  Intaking plenty of fluids during cough will make you feel comfortable, especially warm water.  Drinking bearable hot water will give relaxing sensation to your throat and help alleviate the symptoms.

 

Steaming.  It is an utmost primary therapy to be followed during cough and cold.  The water vapors from steam inhalation will loosen the mucus and help relieve the symptoms of cough.  Steam inhalation along with essential oil, particularly eucalyptus oil will relieve the symptoms of cough and congestion.    Bring water to boil in a small container.  Add 3-4 drops of eucalyptus oil and inhale comfortably.

 

Scenting the room.  If nighttime coughing is keeping you awake, scent your room with eucalyptus oil. 

 

Sleeping position.  If you have nighttime coughing hacks, sleep with your head elevated by stacking a couple of pillows.  Lying flat will cause the mucus accumulate at the back of the throat, hence produce cough.

 

General Tips to Prevent Cough

1.  Reduce stress.

2.  Wash and clean your hands often. 

3.  Avoid unnecessary touch to your nose and mouth.

4.  Avoid close contacts with those who suffer from cough and cold.

5.  Staying hydrated is a good practice.

6.  Get sound sleep.

7.  Add zinc and vitamin C in your diet.

8.  Avoid smoking.  Smoking will trigger your cough.

9.  Sometimes acid reflux can produce cough.  Try to avoid foods that trigger reflux.
